Conclusion of Season 2019-2020
England Hockey understandably directed the suspension of all hockey on March 17th. The date of its recommencement is yet to be determined.
For the bulk of the South League teams this left at least one scheduled match un-played and often also at least one additional match un-rescheduled.
Any decision on how to close the season was necessarily dependent upon decisions by England Hockey and the National League which have a direct impact upon us.
Those decisions were promulgated on April 29th and have been taken into account and largely followed by the South League in making its decisions. A prime conclusion is that there will be no more hockey relating to the past season.
This necessarily extends to any previously scheduled play-offs which will not now take place and consequently no additional promotions will follow. This will disappoint some teams who looked for a chance to gain promotion.
It will however mean generally less relegations.
With no relegation from the National League, otherwise normal promotions and relegations will follow. Promotions will remain the same save for those that would have been enabled by play-offs. Relegations will be fewer but the rule requiring relegation of the bottom team in full divisions will be followed.
Closing league positions will be used as they lie at present.
Final league placings with promotions and relegations are shown on the League website.
Fixtures for next season will be published normally in accordance with league rules. Any teams facing difficulties should contact their league secretary during this period.
Fixtures will be on the basis of the season starting as scheduled but obviously this will be reviewed if it should become necessary.
