Men's 1st XI progress to Kent Cup Semi Final
Sun Jan 27 2019, Marden Russets HC 1st XI Men took on close rivals Maidstone in the Kent Cup hockey Quarter Final.
Russets went down 0-1 after 8 mins after a well worked attack from Maidstone. It took Russets 15 mins to trouble the Maidstone defence with Jon Stiff cleaning up a save off the Maidstone keeper and equalising the game.
Then followed by Matt Wallcott placing Russets in the lead right before half time.
The second half was a completely different game for Marden Russets. The quality of movement, linking of passes and work rate lifted. Stephen Mina-Jones had a number of attempts and finally put one away assisted by Sam Russell-Vick. Minutes later Mina-Jones repaid the favor and assisted Russell-Vick.
The game quickly changed with Russell-Vick getting a 5 mins sin bin and Maidstone applying a full force attack on the Russets team. A quick breakaway for Gaspard Clin (Player/Coach) saw him put Marden Russets 5-1 up with 15 mins remaining in the match.
Tired legs and poor decision started to creep in to the Marden line up. The back four kept miss-trapping followed by Tom Henson, twisted his knee. Mina-Jones from a long corner tried to aerial the ball to left back, Rob Wickham on the over lap. Only for Richard Turner (Maidstone) to intercept the aerial and counter attack and score for making it 5-2 Marden.
Russell-Vick found himself in more trouble with 7 mins left on the clock for a miss understanding with the umpire and saw him self sat down for the remainder of the game. Maidstone took advantage of this and scored (5-3) 2 mins remaining on the clock and the sideways hail slaughtered the players, spectators and officials.
Marden Russets will host a Semi Final match against Gore Court in April and are hoping to make the Kent Cup Final for the first time.
